Focus on Drought types.

Drought occurs when a region faces water shortage. It can last days, months, or years and affects plants, animals, and people.

The types of drought are:

Meteorological drought: Occurs when dry weather patterns dominate an area. It is defined usually on the basis to the degree of dryness and the duration of the dry period.

Agricultural drought: Occurs when agricultural production becomes affected. It focuses on precipitation shortages, differences between actual evapotranspiration, soil water deficits, reduced groundwater and so on.

Hydrological drought: Occurs when low water supply becomes evident and is associated with the effects of periods of precipitation shortfalls on surface or subsurface water supply.

Socio-economic drought: Relates to the supply and demand of some economic goods with elements of meteorological, hydrological, and agricultural drought. It also occurs when the demand for an economic good exceeds supply as a result of a weather-related shortfall in water supply.

Why land restoration matters?

More than half of global GDP relies on healthy ecosystems . Yet each year, an area the size of Egypt is degraded, driving biodiversity loss , increasing drought risk and displacing communities. The ripple effects are global—from rising food prices to instability and migration. But restoring land flips the script. Every dollar invested in restoration generates USD7 to USD30 in returns. Reviving land restores productivity , strengthens water cycles and supports millions of rural livelihoods. “Land degradation and drought are major disruptors of our economy, stability, food production, water and quality of life,” said UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw. “Land restoration is our chance to reverse these threats and create new possibilities.”
