Opening Press Conference of UNCCD COP17.

The 17th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP17) to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) is taking place from August 17–28, 2026, in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Under the official theme "Restoring Land, Restoring Hope," this landmark summit marks the start of an unprecedented "Triple COP" year, where all three Rio Conventions (Land, Biodiversity, and Climate) hold their summits in 2026.

Panelists will focus on Restoring degraded land, expanding global drought resilience, and accelerating sustainable land management to protect the 1.8 billion people globally affected by drought. The two-week event brings together delegates from 197 Parties, alongside world leaders, scientists, youth representatives, and civil society organizations. A major priority is determining how to deploy $12 billion in public funding pledges and mobilizing new private sector finance for restoration. Mongolia is utilizing the platform to highlight its national environmental actions, including its president-led "Billion Trees" National Campaign aimed at planting one billion trees by 2030.
